CORE PRIORITIES
1. Education:
Nurturing Knowledge and Skill
The Southern Dressage Alliance (SDA) is a new equestrian association. While we are based in Aiken South Carolina, membership is open to everyone regardless of geographical location.
As a forthcoming Group Member Organization (GMO) under the United States Dressage Federation (USDF), the SDA is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive equestrian community, centered on the principles of dressage and in accordance with USDF.
Our target audience encompasses dressage riders of all ages and levels of experience, including adult amateurs, youth, and professionals. We welcome those actively engaged in competition as well as those who ride for personal enjoyment and development without a focus on showing.
Beyond traditional dressage devotees, we extend our invitation to “dressage-inspired” disciplines, recognizing the foundational role of dressage in their sports. This includes Eventing/Combined Training competitors, Western Dressage enthusiasts, etc. We also embrace all jumping sports, in recognition of the fact that fundamental dressage principles are crucial for effective riding in these disciplines too.
2. Community:
Fostering Connection and Camaraderie
The SDA is dedicated to cultivating a welcoming and supportive dressage community. We aim to create an environment characterized by warm, friendly interactions among both long-standing friends and new acquaintances.
We’ll organize diverse dressage-related activities outside of formal competition, providing ample opportunities for members to connect, share experiences, and simply enjoy one another’s company.
We strive to foster a culture of camaraderie, mutual support, and shared passion for horses. Our goal is to expand the positive and inclusive tone that defines our existing
3. Recognition:
Celebrating Progress and Learning
The SDA understands the importance of acknowledging member achievements. Dressage competition uniquely involves detailed evaluation by judges. For 2026, we will offer awards for competition results, providing dressage schooling show year-end recognition that members are accustomed to receiving.
Alongside this, we plan to develop innovative new recognition programs that go beyond traditional show results, aligning with our core principles described above. Our aim is to reward and acknowledge members who participate and volunteer in our wide range of programs.
We encourage and promote a clear linkage between advancements in dressage performance and rider commitments to educational growth.
4. Harmonious Partnership:
Cultivating Empathy and Respect
A distinctive priority for the SDA is promoting a philosophy of empathy and respect in the rider/owner’s relationship with their horse. We advocate for a collaborative and harmonious partnership.
Our philosophy encourages riders to move beyond focusing heavily on what the horse can do for them in terms of competition results.
This involves cultivating an understanding of the horse’s innate desire for safety and security. We promote the idea that the rider/owner’s role is that of a protective leader for equines.
This mindful approach to horsemanship, rooted in empathy, trust, and mutual respect, represents a growing trend that the SDA is eager to share and instill within its membership.
